U.S. Veterans Benefits

Eligible American students may be able to finance their studies at Massey University with education benefits available from the Department of Veterans Affairs.


The Education Benefits administered by the department are:

  • The Post 9/11 GI Bill
  • Montgomery GI Bill (Active Duty/Selected Reserve)
  • Veterans/Reserve/Survivors & Dependents Educational Assistance Program
  • Educational Assistance Test Program
  • National Call to Service Program


To find out whether you qualify, visit the Veterans Affairs website, or phone 1-888-GI-BILL-1 (1 888 442 4551) to speak with a counsellor.  How much you are entitled to will depend on your service record. General rates are available as a guide on the VA website.

Programme Approval

The Department of Veterans Affairs will only consider to approve programmes of study in which U.S. veterans are enrolled or interested in enrolling. View a list of approved programmes of study on the Veterans Affairs website. To search for approved programmes enter the following details in the search fields to find the specific Massey information:

  • Institution: Massey University
  • Programme Type: Institution of Higher Learning
  • Select Country: New Zealand
  • Submit
  • Select Massey University
  • Select Programs then Institution of Higher Learning to view a list of currently approved programmes at Massey University

Contact Amy Odom to obtain approval from the Department of Veterans Affairs if you do not see the programme you are interested in listed on website. This may take some time, so please apply as early as possible.

Note: Students receiving Veterans Benefits may only enrol in courses delivered on campus. Extramural/Distance courses are ineligible for Veterans Benefits and students enrolling in them may find their benefits suspended.

Applying for Benefits

Complete an application on the VA website to apply for education benefits for veterans.

The Department of Veterans Affairs will issue you with a Certificate of Eligibility. Please send a copy to Amy Odom.  She will certify your enrolment with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Enrolment will be certified per semester based on the number of credits the student is enrolled.  The VA defines the enrolment status per semester at Massey University as

  • 30 credits - Half-time
  • 45 credits - Three-Quarter time
  • 60 credits - Full-time

If you require further financial assistance you may also be eligible for U.S. Financial Aid under the Direct Loan Programme.
