If you are looking for future learning opportunities to help you expand and develop the knowledge and skills you have learnt from our online Māori language course – Toro Mai – then here are some examples of the range of internationally recognised, online courses that Massey University can offer you.
These courses will run for one semester each (or half a year) and they can be studied either as stand-alone courses, or as part of one of Massey’s globally ranked and recognised qualifications.
We also offer a range of more advanced courses that build on the knowledge and skills that are taught in the above, so you can continue to expand and develop your understanding of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori even further!
An introduction to elementary Māori language structures, Māori terminology and the correct pronunciation of the Māori language. No experience in Te Reo Māori necessary.
An analysis of Māori knowledge, custom and economic foundations. Customary lifestyles will be examined within a context of ritual, philosophy, technology, economic principles, and social organisation in order to understand pre-contact Māori culture and the implications for modern times.
An introduction to the scope of Māori art with a view to recognising traditional elementary forms and their significance. Social and cultural dimensions will be considered and Māori art forms from pre-contact times to the present will be examined within the context of a dynamic and changing society.
This course will equip students with a range of skills to engage with Māori communities including common expressions in Te Reo, an understanding of key traditional concepts, customary practices (tikanga), the importance of the Treaty of Waitangi and the nature and structure of Māori social and political organisations.
An introduction to Māori and global indigenous health issues within Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Ko tenei whakaakoranga reo Māori hei mahinga ma te tauira kua timata ke ki te ako i te reo Māori. Ko tona tino kaupapa, ka whakamahia te reo hei reo whakawhitiwhiti whakaaro, hei reo korerorero i waenganui i te tangata. This course extends listening, speaking and writing competency to enable students to express themselves in Te Reo on a wide range of topics at an introductory level. Emphasis is on spoken and written Māori as a language of communication and interaction.

Not sure where to begin? No problem! You can start off by studying one or two courses of your choosing under a Certificate of Proficiency. The Certificate of Proficiency (Undergraduate) is not a formal qualification. When you have finished these courses, you can then choose to transfer those courses into the Certificate in Arts, the Diploma in Arts, or the Bachelor of Arts.
This online programme can be completed within a minimum of one semester of full-time study, or equivalent part-time.

This online programme can be completed within a minimum of three years of full-time study, or equivalent part-time. You can choose to major in Māori Studies, and minor in Te Reo Māori to further specialise your knowledge.

International students and New Zealand citizens can choose to study fully online with Massey University from anywhere in the world—with no requirement to travel to New Zealand.
