“My communication degree has given me both the confidence and skills to do the work I do. It has also helped me fulfil my dream of being a travel writer …”

I attended Massey University as a ‘mature student.’ It was part of my mid-life crisis and on my bucket list of things to do (I hadn’t previously been to university). I chose to study at Massey for a number of reasons. Firstly, it offered a degree that was a good fit with my interests and previous experience and I also thought it would equip me for a job. Secondly, the course offered flexibility with both extramural and internal papers available. I had heard that Massey’s extramural education system was excellent and it was!

I did wonder how I would find studying with students who were the same age as my children. However, my Massey experience was very positive and my age didn’t prove to be a barrier in any way. In fact, I learnt a great deal from the students and decided they get a lot more bad press than they deserve.

After doing some contract work while I was studying, I set up my company Say It Once Ltd. However, I didn’t do much with it until I had completed my degree.

I am now a freelance business writer and communication trainer and my business is growing. I write content for websites, brochures, flyers and newsletters (print and electronic). I also write a range of communication pieces from advertorials to client letters, and proofread and edit documents. I provide communication and writing training to groups and individuals.
