Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism

Deputy Chief Reporter, Khaleej Times, UAE

I'm currently the Deputy Chief Reporter at Khaleej Times newspaper in the United Arab Emirates, which is the second biggest English language paper in the country. I came here after a year travelling, but my first job out of journalism school was at The Dominion Post, which I secured through the Fairfax Media internship scheme.

After two years as first a general and then the education reporter, I moved to Radio New Zealand to become a broadcast journalist.

Massey made sense to me not only for its location in the political and cultural heart of the country, but because of the high calibre of the course, evident from the range of talented alumni (if it's good enough for Judy Bailey, it's good enough for me).

The course is well-connected with a range of leading publications and broadcasters, which is all-important during the intensive, heavily practical course.

Massey set me up really well to take my first steps into the industry, and I'm still in touch with several tutors, editors and high-profile journalists I met during my time there. Coming from lecture rooms crowded with hundreds at university, it was a thrill to get inside a cosy classroom of about 20, where the lecturers took a real interest in our progress - and our lives - and had all the time in the world to answer the numerous questions fired at them by a room full of budding journalists.

It was also a great time to forge bonds with soon-to-be colleagues. The course offered a supportive environment while covering all the essentials of journalism, and offered opportunities to really stretch ourselves, such as the investigative journalism component that turned into a months-long project.

Massey is one of the top programmes in the country, and that is recognised by the industry. Journalism is alive and kicking, best of luck - and embrace shorthand!
