Apply for a research grant

Massey University’s Working Dog Centre has a strong interest in encouraging and supporting relevant research. We have funds available for small projects and invite applications for funding. We will fund proposals from applicants both from within Massey University, and outside researchers and veterinarians.

Receiving a grant from the Centre is a competitive process, and the success of a given application depends on the amount of available funding, and the quality of the application. The funding committee are not required to fund all applications, and it is better to provide significant funding for a smaller number of projects, rather than to provide a small amount of funding to all proposed projects.

Applications will be ranked according to the following criteria:

• Quality of science is paramount. Quality of proposals will be judged according to the clarity of how the research problem is stated, the appropriateness of the hypotheses and the ability of the study design to test the hypotheses.
• Relevance and importance. The research will address problems of, or questions about working and service dogs. Proposals that fall within the research themes above will have an advantage
• Value. The importance of the research question or problem will be assessed against the amount requested. 

It is recommended that applicants who are not board members of the Working Dog Centre consult a board member prior to submission of applications. You can ask the board member to act in an advisor or guardian role, or be recruited as a research collaborator. The aim of seeking assistance is to:

• Ensure that the project aligns with the research objectives of the WDC
• Improve the quality of submissions where needed
• Ultimately to maximise the chance of successful funding
